Hillary Clinton to Review Knox Case
Hillary Clinton to Review Knox Case
US secretary of state says she will speak to anyone but has not expressed concerns to Italian government
WASHINGTON – Three days ago, one of Amanda’s aunts said that the US state department would look into the case. It sounded more like wishful thinking than a news item. But the Knox family’s relentless campaign to mobilise support has reached into the heart of political Washington at the highest level. In an interview with ABC, the secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, said that she would “meet with anyone who has a concern” over how the Amanda case was handled. She did, however, add that for the time being, she had not expressed “concerns” to the Italian government. The statement came in answer to a question from journalist George Stephanopoulos, who referred to the harsh comments on the Italian judicial system from Democratic senator Maria Cantwell.
Adding her voice to the chorus of protests over the verdict, Senator Cantwell had claimed that the guilty verdict was reached despite not enough evidence having been presented and the obvious anti-Americanism of Italian public opinion. Senator Cantwell repeated her views yesterday and also said she was disappointed because she had been confident of a not guilty verdict.
An almost apologetic (but what for?) Hillary Clinton said that she hadn’t had time to go into the Amanda case because she was “immersed in what we’re doing in Afghanistan”. But the secretary of state wants to make up for lost time: “Of course, I’ll meet with Senator Cantwell, or anyone who has a concern, but I can’t offer any opinion about that at this time”. News of the pledge is understood to have been communicated to Amanda at Capanne prison by her family.
Amanda’s parents hope that the secretary of state will support her innocence and bring the superpower’s political weight to bear on its ally. “Now I do want the government involved and I would be very, very disappointed if they did not get involved”, said Amanda’s father, Curt Knox. The appeal is in line with some of the television coverage of the past few months along the lines of “What’s America waiting for to send in the Marines and free the poor woman?” As if Amanda was in the clutches of some despotic regime.
But such language is light years away from Hillary Clinton’s diplomatic caution. Meanwhile over the past few months, the friends of Amanda have been hard at work to dispel her negative image and rebut the charges. Amanda’s family, the glory-hunting self-styled private investigators and her lawyers have found willing listeners in the media. Television coverage has been almost entirely one-sided and studio guests have presented the Seattle woman as the victim of an arcane legal system. In effect, this has turned the case

La croce sulla bandiera
Northern League Calls for the Cross on the Italian Flag
Castelli’s plans for the flag: “We should learn from Switzerland, and take a stand against Masonic, pro-Islamic ideology”ROME – “Once again, the Swiss have shown us what civilisation is all about”. Overjoyed by the Swiss right’s referendum victory, the Northern League have come up with a new proposal. “We need to take a stand against the Masonic, pro-Islamic ideology to which even our political allies are sadly prone”, said Roberto Castelli, a senior party figure. “In the forthcoming constitutional reform bill, I believe that the Northern League may, and indeed must, ask for the cross to be added to the Italian flag”, he added.
THE NORTHERN LEAGUE – Roberto Calderoli, the Minister for Legislative Simplification, commented that “Switzerland has sent us a clear message: we need to put a check on Islamic politics and propaganda”. His words were echoed by Maurizio Gasparri, leader of the People of Freedom (PDL) in the Senate, who said that “Switzerland has been patient, but is now tired of rising immigration and the spread of Islam. The result of the referendum on minarets confirms this. We should continue to take a hard line in Italy, too, as is our sacrosanct right”. The Northern League MEP Mario Borghezio, meanwhile, praised “Switzerland’s courage”, adding that “the landscape in the historic homeland of federalism and freedom will be free from minarets, which have become more a dangerous symbol of the Islamic terrorist threat than places of worship. Long live white, Christian Switzerland!”.
La Lega: colpo all' islamizzazione
Castelli: ora la croce sulla bandiera italiana. Ma Bossi frena
TURATE (Como)

When Real Life Out-Orwells Big Brother
Blogged up, filmed by mobile phone and posted on YouTube, we live in a house of glass
Yet again, real life has outstripped fantasy, in this case the reality shows that are often considered to have replaced real life as the quintessential non-place for mediacentric existences. When the first edition of Grande Fratello [Big Brother] was broadcast in 2000, hands went up in horror. Television was making real the concept rendered fictionally tragic by George Orwell in 1984, and elaborated theoretically by Michel Foucault in Discipline and Punish. The idea was Jeremy Bentham’s Panopticon, a place of imprisonment and repression in which inmates are observed but cannot themselves observe. Television’s Big Brother, it was mooted, was a hand-me-down from the anti-utopian literature of Zamyatin, Huxley and Burgess, works laden with anguish, rejection and violent, sarcastic humour but also with the bitter rhetoric of martyrdom. Its most celebrated image is the television screen that appears for the first time in Chaplin’s Modern Times (1936). The Tramp having a quiet smoke in the factory washroom is spotted by the boss, who is monitoring him on camera.
In the meantime, real life has been busy. Echelon, the worldwide monitoring system set up during the Cold War, is part of everyday life. CCTV cameras are everywhere. There are taps on the phones, trojans on the web and video surveillance in every building. Thanks to internet, the private is now global, not just public. Politicians’ personal peccadillos hit the public eye as spectacular scandals. There are no sheltered zones in everyday life any more if even tittle-tattle and bedroom antics are now the weapons of politics. Once, people merely rubbernecked at road accidents. Now they film them on their mobiles and upload them onto YouTube. Participants in Big Brother see it as a harmless piece of fun so if one of the house guests is a transsexual, it’s no big deal. Real life, not reality shows, makes us think we are living out the transparency myth in a house of glass.
With all this technology, there’s no point in locking the doors.
